Why they work together
Retinol is the one that tends to irritate. Niacinamide is generally gentle and supports the skin barrier, and some studies suggest niacinamide-based moisturisers can make retinoids easier to tolerate.
How to layer them
There's no strict order. A common approach is niacinamide serum, then retinol, then moisturiser — or retinol followed by a moisturiser that already contains niacinamide.
The usual retinol habits still apply: start two or three nights a week, build up slowly, and wear sunscreen every day.
One caveat
Niacinamide makes retinol easier, not risk-free. If your skin is red and flaky, the answer is less retinol, not more niacinamide.
Common questions
- Can I use niacinamide and retinol together?
- Yes. It's one of the gentlest pairings, and many retinol products already contain niacinamide.
- Should niacinamide go before or after retinol?
- Either works. Niacinamide serum then retinol, or retinol then a moisturiser containing niacinamide, are both common.
- Can I use niacinamide every day with retinol?
- Niacinamide is generally fine daily. The retinol is the one to build up slowly, starting two or three nights a week.
